There are many people who are enthusiastic about food—the cooking of it, the preparation of it, the serving of it, and let’s not forget the eating of it. But Andrew Delaplaine is the ultimate Food Enthusiast. This is another of his books with spot-on reviews of the most exciting restaurants in town. Some will merit only a line or two, just to bring them to your attention. Others deserve a half page or more. “Exciting” does not necessarily mean expensive. The area’s top spots get the recognition they so richly deserve (and that they so loudly demand), but there are plenty of “sensible alternatives” for those looking for good food handsomely prepared by cooks and chefs who really care what they “plate up” in the kitchen. For those with a touch of Guy Fieri, Delaplaine ferrets out the best food for those on a budget. That dingy looking dive bar around the corner may serve up one of the juiciest burgers in town, perfect to wash down with a locally brewed craft beer. Whatever your predilection or taste, cuisine of choice or your budget, you may rely on Andrew Delaplaine not to disappoint. Delaplaine.

Apples of Gold in Filigrees of Silver: Jewish Writing in the Eye of the Inquisition (New Perspectives : Jewish Life and Thought) .pdf download by Colbert Nepaulsingh
During the Spanish Inquisition, daring individuals defied and thwarted persecution by writing works in which hidden meanings were apparent only to Jews or fellow conversos, the descendants of Jewish converts to Christianity. Colbert Nepaulsingh analyses three seminal, sixteenth-century novels as converso works, using them as points of entry to explore the complex era in which the renowned diverse society of medieval Spain gave way to oppression and resistance.

Alexander the Great: King, Commander and Statesman Download PDF By N.G.L. Hammond
Within the span of thirteen years, Alexander the Great changed the face
of the world more decisively and with more long-lasting effects than
any other statesman has ever done. It is therefore no surprise that
there has been, and still is, so much debate about both his personality
and his achievement. The great merit of Professor Hammond's biography
is that, with impressive mastery of the evidence, he sets the record
straight between the extremes of romantic hero worship on the one hand
and scholarly demolition on the other. Based on his detailed knowledge
of the literarysources and on his own experience of warfare in
Alexander's native country, Professor Hammond presents a compelling
picture of Alexander in his public life as king, commander and
statesman. This revised biography includes new material and extensive
reference to literary sources.

The Path of Compassion: The Bodhisattva Precepts (Sacred Literature Trust Series) pdf download (by Dalai Lama)
This new and moving translation of the Brahma's Net Sutra also includes translations of ancillary materials not previously available. Translated and introduced by the well-known teacher and author Martine Batchelor, this should become a classic for all those who aspire to the compassion of the Buddha.
"The Buddha gave clear instructions about how a boddhisattva should preserve and nurture the altruistic aspiration to enlightenment that are contained in the scriptures of the various Mahayana traditions. The Boddhisattva Precepts found in the Brahma's Net Sutra of the Chinese and Korean traditions have laid the foundation of an ethical way of life and the essential ground to a life of compassion for many Buddhists in East Asia since ancient times. We live in an era in which I believe it is extremely important to foster harmony and respect among all religious traditions. Therefore, I believe it is significant that such a seminal text be made more widely in an English translation and I congratulate the translator, the International Sacred Literature Trust and AltaMira Press for making this book, The Path of Compassion, available. Readers, whether or not they.

Robert A. Heinlein: In Dialogue with His Century: 1948-1988 The Man Who Learned Better .pdf download by William H. Patterson Jr.
Robert A. Heinlein: In Dialogue with his Century: 1948-1988 The Man Who Learned Better: The real-life story of Robert A. Heinlein in the second volume of the authorized biography by William H. Patterson!
Robert A. Heinlein (1907–1988) is generally considered the greatest American science fiction writer of the twentieth century. His most famous and widely influential works include the Future History series (stories and novels collected in The Past Through Tomorrow and continued in later novels), Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress―all published in the years covered by this volume. He was a friend of admirals, bestselling writers, and artists; became committed to defending the United States during the Cold War; and was on the advisory committee that helped Ronald Reagan create the Star Wars Strategic Defense Initiative in the 1980s.
Heinlein was also devoted to space flight and humanity's future in space, and he was a commanding presence to all around him in his lifetime. Given his desire for privacy in the later decades of his life, the revelations in this biography make for riveting reading.

Excerpt from Constantinople: Old and New
A number of years ago it happened to the writer of this book to live in Venice. He accordingly read, as every good English-speaking Venetian does, Mr. Howells's "Venetian Life." And after the first heat of his admiration he ingenuously said to himself: "I know Constantinople quite as well as Mr. Howells knew Venice. Why shouldn't I write a 'Constantinople Life'?" He neglected to consider the fact that dozens of other people knew Venice even better than Mr. Howells, perhaps, but could never have written "Venetian Life." Nevertheless, he took himself and his project seriously. He went back, in the course of time, to Constantinople, with no other intent than to produce his imitation of Mr. Howells. And the reader will doubtless smile at the remoteness of resemblance between that perfect little book and this big one.
Aside, however, from the primary difference between two pens, circumstances further intervened to deflect this book from its original aspiration. As the writer made acquaintance with his predecessors in the field, he was struck by the fact that.

download Probabilistic Graphical Models for Genetics, Genomics and Postgenomics [pdf] by Editor in Chief Christine Sinoquet, Editor Raphael Mourad
Nowadays bioinformaticians and geneticists are faced with myriad high-throughput data usually presenting the characteristics of uncertainty, high dimensionality and large complexity.
These data will only allow insights into this wealth of so-called 'omics' data if represented by flexible and scalable models, prior to any further analysis. At the interface between statistics and machine learning, probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) represent a powerful formalism to discover complex networks of relations.
These models are also amenable to incorporating a priori biological information. Network reconstruction from gene expression data represents perhaps the most emblematic area of research where PGMs have been successfully applied. However these models have also created renewed interest in genetics in the broad sense, in particular regarding association genetics, causality discovery, prediction of outcomes, detection of copy number variations, and epigenetics. This book provides an overview of the applications of PGMs to genetics, genomics and postgenomics to meet this increased interest..

Download Prairie Dogs (Our Wild World) {pdf} by Marybeth Lorbiecki
Animals facing threats from human encroachment are featured in these offerings from the Our Wild World series. Prairie Dogs looks at critters considered a keystone species by scientists, linked to the survival of about 40 other species. Horse-lovers will gravitate to the doe-eyed bays on the cover of Wild Horses, which introduces readers to the scattered herds of mustangs still roaming the U.S. Both books spend a great deal of time on these animals' fascinating social systems, from the bands of mares led by a single stallion to prairie dog towns subdivided into coteries. The prose is consistently clear and lively, although Lorbiecki's breathless marveling at prairie dogs' language of chirks, yips, and other vocalizations may lead children to anthropomorphize more than is warranted.

Download A Glorious Church: A Study of the Origin, Identity, Heritage, and Integrity of the New Testament Church {pdf} by Mike Gass
Is there a church on planet Earth that resembles the church that Jesus Christ established? If so, what does it look like? Where can it be found? What is its function and relevance in today's Christian culture?Confusion abounds in Christendom regarding the church of Jesus Christ. It seems that the church is constantly being reinvented. Is this God's intention, or is it the result of a cultural effort to redefine the church? Many of the churches that exist today have been birthed by movements and political powers rather than by our Lord. Men and movements throughout the centuries have obscured the scene with speculation and human traditions. The identity of the church has become varied and diverse. Some believe the church to be universal and invisible while others believe it to be outdated and impractical. So what of the church that Jesus built? A Glorious Church cuts through the confusion, the questions, the politics, and the traditions. It asks tough questions and then answers them clearly and reasonably from God's Word and from the records of history. Regardless of your perspective, there are issues raised in this book that need to be.

download Psalm 8 and Its Christological Re-Interpretations in the New Testament Context: An Inter-Contextual Study in Biblical Hermeneutics (Europaische Hochschulschriften Reihe Xxiii, Theologie) [pdf] by Wenceslaus Mkeni Urassa
The Christian interpretation of the Scriptures has from the very beginning inherited approaches and methods of interpretation from Judaism and Greco-Roman literary world. The thesis begins with an hypothesis of re-interpretation which was first proposed by G. von Rad, examined and applied by professor P. Grech to study the eschatologization process of the prophetic texts in the OT writings. This study seeks to apply the same hermeneutical principles taking Ps. 8 as a study case. The citations of the Psalm in the NT provide new messianical contexts of the Psalm in its eschatological process of re-interpretation.

Download The Next Stop: Inverness to Edinburgh, station by station {pdf} by Simon Varwell
After years travelling by train between Inverness and Edinburgh, Simon Varwell realised that he knew very little about the places he would merely pass through, and to which he would pay no attention as they rushed by in a train window blur. So over the course of six days in 2012, he travelled the line and stopped at all twenty-three stations. It was a trip that led him to the unknown, the beautiful, the isolated, the depressingly mundane, the run-down, and the haunting. From picturesque Highland villages to post-industrial towns, and from crumbling castles to dodgy pubs, a host of curious nooks and crannies across Scotland lurking virtually on his doorstep were finally demystified. He finished the week with some places he was eager to return to for a deeper exploration, and a few others he will be quite happy to never visit again "The real joy of "The Next Stop..." is the revelation that with a little imagination and effort, it is still possible to devise journeys of discovery that are worth making. This book is the story of his journey, told in an engaging style that allows you to see the places he visited through his eyes... The result is an ideal book for.

A Native American Fiction Novel filled with adventure, danger, and romance - Yellowstone Brigade rides with these hunters into the High Lonesome, narrating the savage ferocity of hostile warriors, grizzly bears, and the harsh elements of winter storms. It shares a piece of history the mountain men called the Shining Times.
The Rocky Mountains of the early 1830s were as wild and untamed as the men who dared to venture into them. Trappers, hunters, men with adventurous spirits, and those known as mountain men rode undaunted and unafraid into the harsh domain of the hostile and war-like red man. Pinto Stade and Jehu Wolf were two such men- strong, brave hunters who entered the tall mountains searching out the unexplored valleys and crystal clear lakes that held the treasure they sought. It's not gold; it's something much more valuable to these men. Furs- beaver, martin, fox, and other critters- were what they came for, the furs that would bring cash money at rendezvous.

Before the Bauhaus: Architecture, Politics, and the German State, 1890-1920 (Modern Architecture and Cultural Identity) download .pdf by John V. Maciuika
Before the Bauhaus reevaluates the political, architectural, and artistic cultures of pre-World War I Germany. As contradictory and conflict-ridden as the German Second Reich itself, the world of architects, craftsmen and applied-arts "artists" were not immune to the expansionist, imperialist, and capitalist struggles that transformed Germany in the quarter-century leading up to the First World War. In this study, John Maciuika brings together architectural and design history, political history, social and cultural geography. He substantially revises our understanding of the roots of the Bauhaus and, by extension, the historical roots of twentieth-century German architecture and design. His book sheds new light on hotly contested debates pertaining to the history of Germany in the pre-World War I era, notably the issues surrounding "modernity" and "anti-modernity" in Wilhelmine Germany, the character and effectiveness of the government administration, and the role played by the nation's most important architects, members of the rising bourgeois class, in challenging the traditional aristocracy at the top of the new German economic and social order.

Five Brides Download PDF By Eva Marie Everson
One dress, five women, a lifetime of memories.
Five single, fiercely independent women live together in a Chicago apartment in the early 1950s but rarely see one another. One Saturday afternoon, as they are serendipitously together downtown, they spy a wedding dress in a storefront window at the famous Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. After trying it on―much to the dismay of the salesclerk and without a single boyfriend or date between the five of them―they decide to pool their money to purchase it. Can one dress forever connect five women who live together only a short time before taking their own journeys to love and whatever comes happily ever after?

e-Book Download The Lexicon of Proto Oceanic: The culture and environment of ancestral Oceanic society by Malcolm Ross pdf
This is the second in a series of five volumes on the lexicon of Proto Oceanic, the ancestor of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family. Each volume deals with a particular domain of culture and/or environment and consists of a collection of essays each of which presents and comments on lexical reconstructions of a particular semantic field within that domain. Volume 2 examines how Proto Oceanic speakers described their geophysical environment. An introductory chapter discusses linguistic and archaeological evidence that locates the Proto Oceanic language community in the Bismarck Archipelago in the late 2nd millennium BC. The next three chapters investigate terms used to denote inland, coastal, reef and open sea environments, and meteorological phenomena. A further chapter examines the lexicon for features of the heavens and navigational techniques associated with the stars. How Proto Oceanic speakers talked about their environment is also described in three further chapters which treat property terms for describing inanimate objects, locational and directional terms, and terms related to the expression of time.

In the Watches of the Night: Life in the Nocturnal City, 1820-1930 (Historical Studies of Urban America) pdf by Peter C. Baldwin Download
Before skyscrapers and streetlights glowed at all hours, American cities fell into inky blackness with each setting of the sun. But over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, new technologies began to light up streets, sidewalks, buildings, and public spaces. Peter C. Baldwin's evocative book depicts the changing experience of the urban night over this period, visiting a host of actors-scavengers, newsboys, and mashers alike-in the nocturnal city.Baldwin examines work, crime, transportation, and leisure as he moves through the gaslight era, exploring the spread of modern police forces and the emergence of late-night entertainment, to the era of electricity, when social campaigns sought to remove women and children from public areas at night. While many people celebrated the transition from darkness to light as the arrival of twenty-four hours of daytime, Baldwin shows that certain social patterns remained, including the danger of street crime and the skewed gender profile of night work. Sweeping us from concert halls and brothels to streetcars and industrial forges, In the Watches of the Night is an illuminating study of a vital era in American urban history.

They plunged into a pristine wilderness, pursuing a rich man's vendetta and a missing trove of beaver pelts. Among the high, harsh peaks and embracing valleys they would fight, hunt, and die, pulled into an epic confrontation with the warriors of a murderously mad Indian renegade; an outlaw mountain man, and a traitor within their own ranks. In the tradition of Lonesome Dove, FANDANGO is the gripping, beautiful, and vividly realistic saga of men who gave their blood and tears to a country as wild as their souls. "A SPLENDID, TAUT, TOWERING NOVEL. ZIMMER WRITES WITH GRACE AND POWER. THE STORY RESONATES AND BECKONS TO THE HIGH, LONELY UPLANDS OF THE HEART. download Sacred Errand: in Aboriginal Australia [pdf] by John J. Harkey
We all suffer loss — of a dear friend, a diamond, even a misspent day — and then we move on. But how can the Aboriginal people of Australia ever recover from the loss of their essential religious objects, the secret/sacred tjurunga (cher-UNGA) stones? During a century of British colonial occupation many tjurunga, which had bound together countless generations, were stolen, sold to collectors, or forfeited to missionaries. Readers join naïve American Mark Hafford as he jets over the Pacific Ocean en route to Australia. At his feet is one of the Aboriginal “holy of holies,” a tjurunga stone inherited from his oilman father. Mark is journeying to fulfill the deathbed wish of his father that the stone should go home. Mark’s intent: to hand the object off to an Australian museum, a plan that’s not as easy as it sounds. Mark soon finds himself caught in the turbulence of two cultures in conflict, the Aboriginal and the whitefella Australian. His quest takes us from museum to Lutheran mission, from Aboriginal settlements to the natural shrine (and tourist destination) of Uluru. Historically deep-reaching, the book is peopled with real-life explorers and pioneer poets, along.

Prejudice Across America .pdf download by James Waller
The experiences of a teacher and his white students on a nationwide trek toward racial understanding In 1998 James Waller took twenty-one white college students from Washington state on a month-long journey. Prejudice Across America is the record of their interaction with the American Indian, Asian American, African American, Hispanic, and Jewish experiences nationwide. Few books have so directly and humanly captured the moment when whites confront the realities of those living as a minority in America. Waller reports here on this innovative and award-winning trek. In Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., his students hear both the official story of prejudice and the street story from people living and dealing with racism on a daily basis. Prejudice Across America is as much the journal of these travelers and what they face as it is a sweeping, up-close survey of the nation's racial landscape. The students walk the cheerless halls of a South Side housing project in Chicago, experience the agitated aftermath of the Olympic Games in Atlanta, and attend a briefing with President Clinton's.

e-Book Download Germany and the Politics of Europe's Money (Global Environmental Accord (Paperback)) by Karl Kaltenthaler pdf
As countries in the European Union struggle to comply with the Maastricht Treaty, the question of monetary integration is at the forefront of European politics. Germany and the Politics of Europe’s Money explores how and why Germany—whose economic power makes it a pivotal player in the European monetary system—has developed inconsistent policies toward European monetary institutions and how international institutions affect domestic politics that, in turn, influence state policies toward these institutions.
Moving away from state-centered and Marxist approaches to the study of the European monetary integration process, Karl Kaltenthaler offers a new analytical framework to assess the dynamics within and among the participating countries. Using official and unofficial documents as well as interviews with players ranging from presidents of the Bundesbank to functionaries in the trade unions, Kaltenthaler argues that the number of decision makers negotiating policy and their accountability to interest groups, political parties, government ministries, and Germany’s central bank have made Germany’s fluctuations in policy.
